Frequently Asked Questions
How much is this going to cost?
It depends. My fee is based on your unique case. After learning more about your situation, I will quote you a fee that covers every scenario — from pre-arraignment resolution to trial. I do not charge hourly. I use a graduated fee, meaning the cost increases in steps as the case progresses. However, you will always know the maximum cost at the beginning of the case.
Why hire a juvenile defense attorney over an adult criminal defense attorney?
Just like you’d trust a pediatrician to understand the unique health needs of your child, it’s important to turn to a specialist when your child faces legal challenges. If your child is facing criminal charges, you don’t want just any attorney — you need someone with the knowledge and experience that comes from specializing in Juvenile Court.
Can my child be tried as an adult?
Possibly. A youthful offender case in Massachusetts is generally a more serious felony — such as a firearm charge or violent offense — committed by a child between the ages of 14 and 18. The case remains in Juvenile Court, but the judge has broader sentencing options, including incarceration in an adult facility.
Do children go to jail?
Children held by the court prior to trial go to the Department of Youth Services (DYS). DYS offers different types of programs, ranging from group home-style settings to more secure facilities.
How long will the legal process take?
It depends. The average length between arraignment and trial is about one year. However, many factors can impact the length of a case. I work efficiently to resolve cases as quickly as possible.
What should I do if my child is arrested?
Call me. Do not assume you can talk the police out of anything.
Is Juvenile Court open to the public?
Generally, no. Juvenile Court is closed to the public, meaning only attorneys, court staff, and people directly involved in the case may enter the courtroom. The exception is youthful offender cases, which are open to the public.
How will I know what’s going on with my case?
If you provide me with an email address, you’ll receive an invitation to my case management system. This allows you to check upcoming court dates, view court documents, and send me messages securely.
